Japan's cost effectiveness for visitors, not so much for locals

I've lost count of how many friends and family members have visited me here over the years, but there's one thing I've noticed more and more of with the depreciating yen. The moment they arrive, it's as though they're spending Monopoly money, ordering fancy wagyu, booking luxury ryokan stays, and filling shopping baskets without a second thought.

I don't blame them, either. With a stronger currency, Japan really does feel like incredible value, but earning in yen is a bit of a different story!

A recent article by Malaysian publication The Star explored the contrast, pointing out that while the weak yen has made Japan more affordable than it has been in years for overseas visitors, many people who live here are feeling the squeeze. It's something I think many of us relate to. Wages have risen, but not enough to match the higher cost of living.

That's why I always find the conversation around "cheap Japan" so interesting. It all depends on which side of the exchange rate you're on!
