Halloween costume trends in Japan for 2025

If you're celebrating Halloween in Japan this year, you might be wondering what to wear as a costume. While places like Shibuya give off wild street party vibes, surveys show that for many Japanese, dressing up is less about shock value and more about fun with friends, photos, and self-expression.

A recent survey of 400 men and women in their teens through 30s found that about half have cosplayed for Halloween at some point. Interestingly, only about 20 percent say they plan to do so this year, and perhaps that could be indicative of trying to save some yen. Still, those who do dress up tend to choose familiar favorites.

For both men and women, the most popular option is anime or movie characters. After that, men lean toward monsters like Dracula and zombies, or military-style uniforms. Women, on the other hand, often go for maid outfits (a staple of Japanese cosplay culture), followed by classic monster costumes.

If you're planning your own costume, these trends might give you some inspiration!
