Father's Day 2026 spending trends in Japan
If you're celebrating Father's Day in Japan this month, you don't need to break the bank to make a impression. In fact, new survey data suggests that practical and reasonably priced gifts are becoming the norm.

According to a survey of 930 people across the country, around half of all Father's Day gift budgets fall between 2,000 and 5,000 yen. The most common spending range was 2,000 to under 3,000 yen, showing a preference for expressing gratitude without unnecessary extravagance.
I personally think that's good news for expats who may be navigating Japanese family traditions for the first time. If you have a father-in-law or another father figure here, the expectation isn't necessarily to buy the most expensive gift. Instead, thoughtfulness and practicality appear to carry more weight.
The survey found that gifts such as gourmet foods, health products, and everyday items like quality tumblers or pillows are increasingly popular, and rather than luxury items, many shoppers are choosing presents that can be enjoyed or used in daily life.
The findings also reflected some of the economic realities right now, with rising prices making shoppers more mindful of their budgets. Yet rather than skipping Father's Day altogether, many people are opting for simpler ways to say thank you.
