Doctors warn about drinking outside in Japan's summer heat

As we head into the warmer months here, there's no shortage of ways to enjoy a drink outdoors, from rooftop bars and beer gardens to atmospheric festivals. Even though I think that sipping a cold beer at an event can feel like one of the best parts of summer in Japan, a new survey suggests it may also be harder on the body than many people realize.

According to a recent study by Shizen Shokuken Co., Ltd., nearly 80% of people say they tend to drink more alcohol outdoors than they normally would indoors. Beer gardens and barbecues ranked among the most popular summer activities, with many respondents saying the relaxed, festive atmosphere made it easier to lose track of how much they were consuming.

That extra drinking comes with consequences, too. Around 60% of respondents said they'd experienced health issues after drinking outdoors during summer, with fatigue and lethargy topping the list. Headaches, hangovers, and gastrointestinal issues also ranked highly.

Doctors shared the concern, with around 90% of surveyed internists and gastroenterologists saying that outdoor drinking in summer places more strain on the body than drinking indoors. Many pointed to dehydration, increased blood alcohol concentration, and additional stress on the liver as key risks, particularly during the peak heat and humidity.

One particularly notable finding was that persistent fatigue and lethargy (which is something many people brush off as simply "being tired the next day") was identified by doctors as a possible sign of liver strain.

The good news is that many of the recommended countermeasures are fairly straightforward. Survey respondents reported pacing their drinks, staying hydrated, and avoiding drinking on an empty stomach. Doctors also recommended scheduling alcohol-free days and paying closer attention to nutrition during the summer months.

It's a good reminder for expats adjusting to Japan's intense heat and humidity that summer drinking here can hit differently than it might back home. A couple of drinks may feel harmless at first, but when combined with heat, sweating, and long hours outdoors, the effects can sneak up quickly!

Are you a little more mindful of how much you drink when it's hot outside?
