The description
Available at some convenience stores, Tombow brand HB pencils come in packs of three. The simple pencils come with plastic caps and are wrapped in a retro plastic package.
The good
Are you a fan of Japan's bounty of writing utensils? I'm in awe of the variety and utility. But hear me out. My go-to favourite writing implements are simple HB pencils. Recently, I was in a pinch when my super duper mechanical pencil for daily record-keeping wouldn't cooperate with new leads. So I picked up a packet of three Tombow HB pencils with plastic caps. They're ideal for keeping notes in journals and household ledgers. The three pencils cost a reasonable 140 yen. I use them daily to make notes in my monthly planner.
The not so good
Yeah, you have to sharpen these pencils, so they disappear the more you use them. But for retro and environmentally friendly reasons, I go for these. Sure, mechanical pencils are a treat with their ergonomic designs. But they use a lot of material, including plastic and metal. I like the simple, old-fashioned HB pencils. Besides, Tombow, in business for over 100 years, has committed to reducing resources. Look out for items such as paper-based packaging for correction tape and "Kimonogatari" pencils that use scrap wood in their manufacture.
