The description
At a Besia Supermarket in suburban Chiba Prefecture, you can find some imported sauces from Thailand. This item is a 230-gram glass bottle of Sweet Chilli Sauce.
The good
For those of us who've got a hankering for Thai flavours and condiments, I can't recommend Sweet Chilli Sauce more. Whether you're of Thai heritage or an international visitor to Thailand, sweet chilli sauce is an awesome condiment. Nam chin kai, sweet chilli sauce gets applied to lettuce wraps, spring rolls, and chicken wings in popular Thai cuisine. The lightly spicy and sweet condiment goes on my breakfast of fried eggs and dinner and bento sides of spring rolls. The sauce available in Japan is pretty close to the real thing.
The not so good
This version of nam jim gai, or sweet chlli sauce, is a fragrant and flavourful condiment that lends itsself well to South Asian dishes. It's reasobably priced, too. It recalls vistits to Thailand, a country not far from Japan, that has a rich cuisine. I like to add sweet chilli sauce to simple dishes such as fried eggs and spring rolls. The version of sweet chilli sauce captures the mild flavour of Thai chilli sauce adds zip with only a hint of heat. I recommend it for a gentle zip with karaage, tsukune, and other fried foods.
