The description
A fun new addition to 7-11’s seasonal chilled sweets has appeared! The castella with salted vanilla whipped cream (aka the ふわふわカステラ塩バニラホイップ, the fuwa fuwa kasutera shio banira hoipu) has a base price of 220 yen, coming to a total of 237 yen with tax included.
The good
I am quite a fan of salted vanilla. It’s not quite as high in my list of loves as salted caramel but it’s certainly up there, and it’s good to see it becoming a feature of summer sweets menus in recent years. I was always quite likely going to enjoy this sweet, and it didn’t disappoint. The castella cake really is very soft and fluffy, just as the ふわふわ name promises, and the cream is lovely. The vanilla taste is not overly strong but it’s still very definitely there, and the salt notes are very clear.
The not so good
I don’t really have any complaints here. The treat is delicious, in my humble opinion. That said, it seems to stretch the definition of “castella” quite a bit and if you have a very fixed view of what castella cakes are meant to entail, you might want to reconsider this treat. In addition, while 237 yen is quite a decent price for cakes (especially recently), this nonetheless isn’t the cheapest sweet im 7-11’s menu and there might be cheaper treats that you would find equally enjoyable. For me, this is a definite hit. It’s almost certainly season-limited and I plan to enjoy it as long as it is on the 7-11’s shelves.
