Apricot Time!

It seems like the all-too-limited window of time in which you can easily get apricots at supermarkets around here is upon us!

Apricot Time! photo

Fresh apricots, or anzu (kanji: 杏, though I have been seeing the hiragana or katakana used more, あんず or アンズ) are one of my favorite fruits. They are mild in taste and easy to eat - you just pull them into halves and sway you go! I also admit to valuing them more since I don’t see them all that much. While dried apricots are not particularly challenging to find, fresh apricots only really seem to be widely available (relatively!) in the early half of summer.

They aren’t cheap, and the ones in the photo cost 888 yen (plus tax) for a pack of eight. I did come upon a pack of ten being sold at Maruetsu for 498 yen (plus tax), which is basically a bargain as apricots go.

I don’t expect they will be around much longer, so I’ll be enjoying this little summer treat while it lasts!
