Strange Heat Haze
It’s hot and humid, and today there have been isolated rain showers and storms just to add to it. Yet, the real icing on the cake is the strange haze that has been hanging over us for the past couple of days.
(Screenshot from my phone this afternoon)
When I went outside late yesterday afternoon, it looked as though a fog was settling in for the evening, and the same thing happened again today. The idea of fog seems quite fantastic in the current climate, but that is definitely not what is going on.
There doesn’t seem to have been any public health alert or anything like that, so presumably the weird haze is the result of “standard” industrial pollution and the still, humid weather. There’s definitely not been much of a wind to blow things along.
I am assuming I’m not one of those (… currently) who are especially sensitive to mildly unhealthy air pollution, purely on the basis that I don’t feel any different to usual healthwise. Still, I hope it dissipated and the air clears soon! The heat is quite enough to contend with without finding things to make it even worse!
Stay safe out there! Alternatively, stay safe inside instead!

I've been curious about this haze too. I've noticed it quite a bit in the last two weeks. We really need some rain to clear the air!

I'm following r/japanweather on Reddit in which the moderators provide a lot of details. The low AQI is due to the combination of the Shinmoedake volcanic eruption and industrial pollution, which affects nearly everywhere except northern Tohoku and Hokkaido. Tomorrow in the Kanto region, the rain should wash away the grub.
