The description
A new Black Thunder flavour has appeared, apparently this week or not long before. These come in a packet of small Black Thunder cubes, and retail for 138 yen (including tax), which is currently a bit less than similarly sized chocolate bars and bags of chocolates.
The good
I love chocolate and I generally really like coconut as a flavour, so this variety of Black Thunder was always going to appeal to me. It certainly doesn’t disappoint. There is no mistaking these chocolates for being anything other than members of the Black Thunder family, with their characteristics chocolate-coated cookie pieces, but there is a very generous serving of coconut in there too. I also like how it’s pretty cost-effective. Bags of “hitokuchi” (bite-sized) chocolates are retailing for more than 150 yen lately, and it’s nice to see a chocolate that is actually cheaper than expected for a change.
The not so good
Coconut can easily be overwhelming and it does feel a bit like it is competing with the usual Black Thunder chocolate flavours. It ends up working anyway, but it does feel discernibly richer than usual. In addition, while it’s a pretty decent price for what it is, I still prefer my Black Thunders in their cheaper, individually wrapped state. I don’t have the self-control to eat just one “bite”, Black Thunder! I’m hoping an individually packaged version comes out as well. All in all, however, this is definitely worth a try and it was enjoyable enough. I can certainly see myself buying them again.
