While I eat red bean paste and enjoy it, it isn't my favorite thing in the world. The lumpy texture is what I find the least pleasant. But when I saw the time-limited Tsukimi pie from McDonald's I just had to try it. What I liked most is that the red bean paste wasn't too lumpy and the flavor wasn't overbearing. It added a gentle sweetness while the mochi adds a pleasant chewy texture. The mochi also helps to make the dessert more substantial. I also liked that the pie is served warm. And the Hokkaido butter brings an extra richness and creamy note, although very subtle. Overall, the balance works really well. It smells nice too! It feels like a special treat for the season of Tsukimi (moon viewing).

As it is a seasonal product, it is only available a few weeks of the year. I know that McDonald's bring back the Tsukimi burger every year, but I don't know about the Tsukimi pie. Hopefully, if it is popular it will be available around Tsukimi again in future years. The mochi adds texture, but it can also create an uneven eating experience. In some bites, the chewy mochi may dominate the filling, making the pie feel less balanced. Depending on serving temperature, the mochi can become either pleasantly soft or somewhat sticky, which may not appeal to everyone. The pastry shell, while crisp and flaky, can also make the dessert messy to eat as small flakes break apart easily.
