Globe Amaranth, a Birthday Flower of September 22nd

Globe Amaranth, known in Japanese as Sennichiko (千日紅) is one of the birthday flowers of September 22nd annually. It is also the birthday flower of August 14th. Native to tropical regions of the Americas, it produces small, globe-shaped blooms in vivid shades of pink, purple, red and white. 

The blooming season for globe amaranth in Japan typically runs from July to November, allowing the flowers to bridge the transition from summer to autumn. I took the photo in this post mid-September. Their extended flowering period is reflected in the plant's Japanese name, which literally means “thousand-day crimson.” The name suggests blooms that seem to last far longer than many other seasonal flowers, retaining their beauty even after drying.

The hanakotoba (language of flowers) for globe amaranth is "unfading love" (iroasenai ai, 色あせぬ愛) and "immortality / eternity" (fukyū, 不朽). These meanings stem from the flower's enduring color and long-lasting blooms. In Western flower language, similar meanings include “unfading love” and “immortality,” making globe amaranth a symbol of lasting affection, cherished memories, and bonds that stand the test of time.
