Japan does International Coastal Cleanup Day Differently

This year, 2026, the International Coastal Cleanup Day was on Saturday September 19th... except for in Japan. Japan celebrates the day annually on September 22nd. In addition, rather than call it "coastal" cleanup day, they call it "beach" cleanup day. In Japanese, Kokusai biichi kuriin appu dee 国際ビーチクリーンアップデー. 

Japan's connection to the movement goes back to 1990, when the Japan Environmental Action Network (JEAN) brought the International Coastal Cleanup program to the country. What makes the initiative unique is that volunteers do more than simply collect rubbish. Participants also record the items they find, creating valuable data that helps researchers identify common sources of marine debris and track pollution trends over time.

For Japan, an island nation surrounded by the sea, the message is particularly relevant. Much of the litter that ends up on beaches originates inland, travelling through rivers, drainage channels, and waterways before reaching the coast. The day serves as a reminder that protecting the ocean begins long before rubbish reaches the shoreline. Whether joining a cleanup event or simply picking up a few pieces of litter on a walk, small actions can contribute to cleaner beaches and healthier marine environments for future generations.
