Could You Go a Day Without Your Car?

September 22nd is World Car Free Day, an international observance that encourages people to leave their cars at home and choose alternatives such as walking, cycling, or public transport instead. The event is held in cities around the world to promote cleaner air, reduce traffic congestion, and encourage more sustainable ways of getting around. Even Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism describes Car-Free Day as an opportunity for people to think about transportation and environmental issues.

However, the day remains relatively unknown in Japan. In many countries, giving up a car for a day can be a significant change in routine. In Japan, however, millions of people already rely on trains, buses, bicycles, and their own feet for daily transportation. Dense urban development, extensive rail networks, and walkable neighborhoods make car-free living far more practical than in many parts of the world. Perhaps that is why World Car Free Day has never gained the same level of attention here. For many residents of Japan, especially in larger cities, every day is already a little bit like Car Free Day.

With all that being said: I live in an area where it would be very difficult to survive without a car. I don't use my car every day. In fact, I can even go a week or more without using it, but with no train station nearby and a limited bus service, a car is necessary. Could you go a day or more without your car?
