A quick checklist in preparation for a double typhoon

A double typhoon is on its way to Japan. Typhoon No. 7, "Mekkhala" and typhoon No. 8, "HIgo", are expected to wreak havoc in Japan over the coming days - from today June 25th to the 27th at least. But if there are landslides and flooding after, we could see disruptions until the 28th or beyond.

Are you prepared? Here's a quick checklist I mentally run through when there's a typhoon on the way;

  1. Are the drains / storm drain gate / downspout outlets clear? Make sure there are no leaves or other debris clogging up any place where rain drains.
  2. Have you any roof tiles missing and / or leak areas that need to be tended to?
  3. Are bicycles that are kept outside secured in place? You may need to take them inside if there is nowhere you can store them securely outside.
  4. Have bike covers, awnings and any other outdoor covers been secured? These can also blow away so they should be brought inside.
  5. Have all hanging items been secured? Hanging baskets, wind chimes, decorations etc should be brought inside for safe keeping.
  6.  Have laundry poles or equivalent been secured? I put mine on the ground of the verandas as they are pretty heavy, but some may need to be brought inside.
  7. Are all other garden / veranda items secured? Anything that can be blown away - toys, gardening tools etc. should be brought inside or firmly secured.
  8. Are your windows prepared? For example, packing tape across the windows, towels on the sills etc.
  9. Have you a full tank of gas in your car / motorcycle?
  10. Do you have bottled water?
  11. Have you enough emergency food? Things that don't need much preparation - cup ramen, canned foods etc?
  12. Do you have cling film? This is useful if the water goes - wrap plates with cling film so you don't need to wash them after use.
  13. Are your portable power banks fully charged?
  14. Have you emergency supplies for the house in case the electricity / gas / water goes? Such as gas cylinders, batteries, torches, candles, disposable chopsticks, body wipes, dry shampoo, portable toilet bags etc. You might want to fill the bath too.
  15. Is your grab-bag ready to go and up to date? And does it include a first aid kit?

Anything else you would add to this list? Here's hoping that none of the above will be necessary at all! Stay safe everyone.
