A rare double typhoon scenario in Japan

If you are living in Japan, no doubt you have heard by now that there is a double typhoon expected to hit Japan between today, Thursday June 25th, and Saturday, June 27th. The storm is currently hovering southwest of Okinawa

The 7th typhoon of the season, named "Mekkhala", was initially forecast as an 'extremely powerful' typhoon. However, it has since weakened significantly. Which is good news, but it still remains a highly dangerous system. Especially as it is arriving with typhoon number 8, "Higo," on its tail, increases the risks involved. Higo itself currently doesn't look to be as intense and by itself would not have been a high-risk typhoon.

Prior to this double typhoon, the last time Japan faced a notable simultaneous double typhoon was in October 2013. But there have been other similar situations, where typhoons arrive in close proximity but not simultaneously on the same days. Such as in 2016, Japan was barraged with four typhoons over a short period of time.

There are many other incidences of typhoons arriving close together, but those that arrive simultaneously remain a rare occurrence. An occurrence that should not be taken lightly and adequately prepared for. Stay safe everyone.
