Moana and the Legend of the Sea – Live‑Action Release in Japan (July 31, 2026)

The live‑action adaptation of Disney’s beloved Moana finally arrives in cinemas across Japan tomorrow, Friday July 31st, 2026. The film reimagines the 2016 animated classic with real actors, new visual storytelling, and a fresh interpretation of the island world that captured so many hearts.

One of the biggest highlights for fans is the return of Dwayne Johnson, who voiced Maui in the original animation. This time, he steps fully into the role in live action, bringing Maui’s humor, swagger, and warmth to life on screen.

Moana herself will be played by Katherine Lagaia, a rising actress chosen specifically for the live‑action adaptation. The animated Moana was voiced by Auliʻi Cravalho, who is not reprising the role in this version; a deliberate choice by Disney to introduce a new performer for the live‑action format.

Most major cinema chains in Japan, including TOHO Cinemas, Aeon Cinema, United Cinemas, and 109 Cinemas, will screen Moana and the Legend of the Sea. As is common for family‑friendly releases here, the majority of screenings will be dubbed rather than subtitled, especially during daytime showings.
