An Ideal Event for Elementary School Students’ Summer Free Research Projects

Yesterday I wrote about the 'free research' project that is an essential part of Japanese summer homework. Then today I saw this flyer for a "Summer Vacation Science & Craft Workshop" - an ideal event for elementary school students looking for help and inspiration for their compulsory projects. 

Westa Kawagoe is hosting a lively two‑day event packed with science experiments, creative crafts, and interactive learning. The Summer Vacation Independent Research Operation 2026 is on August 1st and 2nd, from 10 am to 4 pm, across the Yaoko Multipurpose Hall and Meeting Rooms 1 and 3. That is at the Kawagoe Unicus, close to the West exit of Kawagoe station.

Children can try fluffy slime, build robots, explore a glowing art lab, make Bulgarian yogurt, craft constellation charts, and even step inside a portable planetarium. Many workshops are perfect for school holiday research projects, and each activity is designed to be fun, approachable, and hands‑on.

Some of the workshops require an advance booking, but at least three of them do not require a booking. There is no admission fee, but some of the workshops have a small charge. If you can't make this event, there is another on August 25th at the same venue: "Exciting SDGs Experience Lab". It also has free entry.
