Seven Lucky Gods Day: The Edible Type!

Today, and July 29th annually, is Seven Lucky Gods Day 七福神の日 in Japan. Not the type you find at a shrine or a temple, but the ones you find in a confectionery! It is a cheerful anniversary created by the long‑established confectionery company Saiwai Senbei in Maebashi and Ginza, who make the beloved Seven Lucky Gods Senbei. The date comes from a playful pun of 7/29:  "Shichi (7) Fu (2) Ku (9)", the Japanese name for the Seven Lucky Gods. 

Saiwai Senbei has been making rice crackers for over a century, and their popular Seven Lucky Gods Senbei, Seven Lucky Gods Arare, and Ginza Seven Lucky Gods are at the heart of this day. Each assortment includes seven different flavors, inspired by the seven deities of good fortune. Some packages even feature charming illustrations of Ebisu, Daikokuten, Benzaiten, and the others, adding a cheerful touch to the snack.

Although the Seven Lucky Gods have deep cultural roots, this anniversary is really about celebrating a beloved traditional treat. It’s a fun reminder of how Japanese makers weave folklore into everyday foods, turning a simple senbei assortment into a little bundle of luck.
