The description
This product is a seaweed‑wrapped onigiri filled with generous hand‑flaked salmon, with soft rice and savory kelp seasoning. It cost 198 yen at Yaoko.
The good
This onigiri features cooked salmon fillet pieces that were gently separated into pieces by hand (using fingers, a fork, or chopsticks) rather than being processed, minced, or ground up by a machine. It shows in the taste which was reminiscent of the handmade salmon onigiri my husband makes. The rice has a pleasant firmness, and the kelp seasoning adds a subtle depth that enhances the salmon without overpowering it. The salmon pieces are large and flavorful, giving the onigiri a homemade quality that stands out from typical convenience store versions. The seaweed wrap adds a crisp, savory contrast.
The not so good
It is more expensive than onigiri in other supermarkets at 198 yen before tax. But because it is made fresh with good ingredients it feels worth it. However, it is a bit on the small size, but you can buy a larger version of it - at a more expensive price. On balance for this product, 198 yen before tax isn't that expensive. I don't know how widely available this product is. They may not sell it at other branches - it might be unique to this particular branch. But you can usually pick up salmon onigiri with some wakame at most supermarkets around Japan, although they probably won't feature hand flaked salmon.
