Outstanding Public High School Bunkasai

I’ve been to my fair share of bunkasai (school cultural festivals) over the years; starting in my teaching days and continuing now as a parent. They usually follow a familiar rhythm: performances on stage, art exhibitions, and classrooms transformed into imaginative worlds or practical spaces, all celebrating students’ abilities and creativity. But the bunkasai I visited this past Sunday surpassed them all.

It was, without a shadow of a doubt, the most engaging, colorful, and creative bunkasai I’ve ever experienced. The level of skill on display was far beyond anything I’ve seen at other festivals. Because of the school’s policies to protect students, I can’t reveal the school’s name, and honestly, even without those rules, I wouldn’t. The privacy of the students matters more than publicity. I will say this much: it’s a public high school.

What set this bunkasai apart?

Nearly every classroom had been reimagined, not merely dressed up. The students transformed each space completely; walls, lighting, atmosphere - everything. It was genuinely breathtaking. I wandered through haunted houses, escape rooms, cozy cafés, treasure‑hunt rooms, and more. And then I turned a corner and found an umbrella sky which completely won me over. Their creativity filled every corner of the school. The live performances, too, were on another level entirely.
