A new commemoration in 2026: the Chestnut Festival, Sweet Chestnut Day

A new commemoration has been officially added to Japan’s anniversary calendar in 2026: September 9th as Chestnut Festival / Sweet Chestnut Day 栗の節句・甘栗の日. The date is that of an ancient Japanese seasonal festival known as Chōyō no Sekku (重陽の節句), and it is commonly called both the Chrysanthemum Festival (Kiku no Sekku) and the Chestnut Festival (Kuri no Sekku). This new festival slots in with the latter.

The day was established by Marusei Shoji, a company that has spent nearly 60 years bringing the flavor of Tianjin sweet chestnuts and other chestnut products to consumers. Their goal is to help preserve Japan’s chestnut‑related seasonal customs and share the appeal of sweet chestnuts with a wider audience.

With its official registration, the company sees 2026 as a meaningful milestone and hopes to continue delivering the charm of chestnuts for years to come.
