Colonel's Day - celebrating the founder of KFC

Today, and September 9th annually, is Colonel's Day カーネルズ・デー in Japan. It is a celebration of the birthday of the real-life founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC), David "Colonel" Sanders. The date comes from his birth in 1890 and the Japan commemoration day was established by KFC Japan.

The day isn't just about fried chicken: it's meant to honor Sander's legacy as a pioneer who shaped the modern franchise model and devoted himself to creating food with genuine care and consistency. In Japan, his image has taken on a uniquely affectionate presence. The familiar white suited statue standing outside KFC stores actually began in Japan, crafted with meticulous detail, even down to prescription lenses in the glasses. 

Sanders visited Japan three times during his lifetime, once shaking hands with his own statue and delighting in how faithfully it captured him. The day highlights his legacy in Japan and naturally brings a bit of attention to Kentucky Fried Chicken as well.
