What to Look For During a Bunkasai Visit

As a follow on to my post about "Why Bunkasai Matter" when choosing a Senior HIgh School, a few key things to look out for during a bunkasai (cultural festival) visit. Obviously, the student's work and creative skills will be on display, but there are a few other things to pay attention to as a parent of a prospective student:

• Student behavior: Are they polite, confident, relaxed, stressed? Is everyone involved and no kid left sitting on their lonesome.
• Teacher involvement: Are teachers supportive and present, or hands‑off? Do the students seem to have a good relationship with the teacher?
• Facilities: You’ll see classrooms, hallways, and club rooms in real use. Any red flags? Do they have good equipment? Everything in working order?
• Diversity of activities: A wide range of displays often means a healthy school and club ecosystem.
• Overall energy: Does the school feel welcoming? Motivated? Creative? Competitive? Organized? 

These small observations often reveal more than any official school explanation. Unlike formal school tours, bunkasai show the school at its most authentic. Students are in charge. They decorate, perform, organize, and guide visitors. You see how they communicate, how they solve problems, and how they express themselves - all of which reflect the school’s culture.

If you’re choosing a Senior High School this year or even next year, try to visit at least one or two bunkasai. Even if you already have a school in mind, seeing it during its cultural festival can confirm your choice - or surprise you with a new option. Moreover, they are often a fun half-day out for families!
