Encouraging calorie mindfulness

Today, and June 6th annually, is Low Calorie Diet Day in Japan. It is an anniversary created by a company that specializes in food‑related mail‑order services. The date of the anniversary comes from a playful reading of 6.6:  "low (6) calo (6) ry", linking the numbers to the idea of low‑calorie eating.

Rather than a strict dieting message, reportedly the company created the anniversary to gently encourage avoiding unnecessary calories. The purpose of the anniversary is to inspire people to take a closer interest in the calories they consume each day and to make smart, sustainable choices that support long‑term health rather than short‑term restriction.

By raising awareness in a friendly, accessible way, the day encourages small habits. Such as reading labels, choosing lighter options, or simply being mindful during meals. To be honest, I am not a big fan of diet related anniversaries, but this one does seem to more about mindfulness than pushing people to lose weight.
