Starbucks Japan's 30th Anniversary Renewal: "WHY NOT COFFEE?"
Starbucks Japan is celebrating its 30th anniversary. The first branch opened in Japan in August 1996 in the Ginza District, Tokyo. For the 30th anniversary they are having a nationwide "refresh" under the campaign theme "WHY NOT COFFEE?".
For the campaign, Starbucks Japan has reintroduced several classics with upgraded recipes which they claim have deeper flavors. They have also adopted a renewed focus on craftmanship. Rather than simply releasing limited-edition drinks, as they do periodically and often for anniversaries, they have taken the milestone as an opportunity to rethink and renew the everyday menu items.
I was unaware of the new campaign until I visited a Starbucks today, April 17th 2026, I saw signs for the "new" Caramel Macchiato and was intrigued so I decided to order that. You can find it reviewed in the City-cost product review section. Supposedly, the Caramel Macchiato has been rebuilt from the ground up, so to speak. They have also renewed some of their bakery line-up too.
To be honest, I would have preferred a limited-edition Frappuccino today, but I didn't see any on offer. However, I did not regret getting the delicious Caramel Macchiato, but - frankly - I didn't notice much of a change in the taste. Also, apart from the 30-year anniversary message on my coffee cup, pictured, I didn't notice much else about the 30-year anniversary. I also haven't seen much online or on media. I feel like overall this anniversary is currently quite low key at Starbucks Japan.

Former nickname was "Saitama". Changed it to save confusion on place review posts! Irish, 20+ years in Japan! I also write on my personal website: insaitama.com
