The description
Kura Sushi's ebi tempura nigiri pairs two crispy battered shrimp with seasoned sushi rice. A warm, crunchy alternative to traditional seafood sushi that appeals to both adults and children.
The good
If you ever wondered whether you can get anything other than raw fish at a revolving sushi restaurant chain; the answer is yes. I have been introducing a few of the options for anybody who might be searching for what they might eat at a kaiten sushi if they don't like raw fish. Like this deep fried battered shrimp option. Instead of sashimi, you get two pieces of crispy tempura shrimp resting on sushi rice, creating a combination of crunchy texture and warm flavor that stands out from many other plates on the conveyor belt. My children love it because the tempura coating is light and crispy, making it feel familiar and approachable. For anyone hesitant about raw fish, this is a great introduction to sushi dining.
The not so good
While my children love this dish, I personally rarely order it for myself. Simply because I prefer the chance to eat raw fish - it is not something we would prepare at home, but we would have cooked fish somewhat regularly. The other negative thing is the price. At 180 yen, before tax, it is one of the more expensive ones on the nigiri menu. But not the most expensive - some options are 200 yen. However, you get two for the price, which you can eat by yourself or share. I will be ordering it again though, for my children who look forward to this dish when visiting Kura Sushi.
