Akizakura: The Poetic Name for Cosmos

Few flowers are as closely associated with autumn in Japan as the cosmos. Known by the poetic name 秋桜 (akizakura), and also sometimes read as cosmos, the name literally means "autumn cherry blossom". Cosmos, or akizakura, is an established autumn kigo, a seasonal word used in haiku and traditional poetry. The name reflects the flower's delicate appearance, with petals that can evoke the gentle beauty of cherry blossoms, but in an entirely different season.
As a kigo, cosmos belongs to mid-autumn (仲秋) and signals a landscape that has shifted away from the heat of summer. Fields of pink, white, and magenta flowers swaying in the breeze have become a familiar image of the Japanese countryside during this time of year. In haiku, the flower often conveys feelings of quietness, nostalgia, and the changing seasons.
Today, however, cosmos is not confined to poetry. Across Japan, vast cosmos fields draw visitors each autumn, transforming parks, riverbanks, and rural landscapes into seas of color. They remain one of the most recognizable symbols of autumn. Its role as a kigo provides a link between traditional literary culture and the seasonal scenery enjoyed by people today.
