Invention Day and Japan's active patent office
April 18th is Invention Day 発明の日 Hatsumei no Hi in Japan. While reading up on the annual observance, I learned a few things about Japan's patent office and was surprised to learn that Japan has a very active patent office. Reportedly, tens of thousands of applications are filed each year.
The Invention Day anniversary was created in honor of Japan's first patent system, which began on April 18th, 1885, with the enactment of the "Senbai Tokkyo Jorie", the predecessor of today's Patent Act. This milestone laid the foundation for a modern framework that protects creativity, particularly technological creativity. The Patent Office in conjunction with the Science and Technology Agency established the anniversary to deepen public understanding of industrial property rights and to reaffirm the importance of innovation.
Of the thousands of applications each year, only a portion ultimately get approved and even a smaller share reaches commercialization stage. This steep funnel highlights how challenging, and valuable, true innovation can be. Beyond the legal system, the week surrounding April 18th is designated as Science and Technology Week, created decades ago in 1960 to spark innovation.
At this time of year, across Japan, regional bureaus and educational institutions host exhibitions, lectures and hands on workshops. Together, these events celebrate not only the inventions of the past but encourage the inventions of the future.
