Chiikawa: A Summer Movie Hit in the Making

Yesterday I wrote about how Toy Story 5 has been well received in Japan. But it is not the only summer movie of note this year. Later this month the much awaited and highly anticipated Chiikawa movie is set to hit the screens. This will be the first ever feature length Chiikawa movie and it is almost guaranteed to be one of the season's most popular releases.

Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of Mermaid Island (Eiga Chiikawa: Ningyo no Shima no Himitsu) is scheduled to open in movie theaters on July 24th, 2026. I expect it to be huge, possibly even breaking new records. Chiikawa has become a cultural comfort character. Gentle, cute, pure and beloved across generations. There is already so much excitement around its movie debut. 

The story, centered on Mermaid Island, adds that soft, magical touch that Chiikawa fans love, and the visuals promise the kind of pastel, heartwarming world that feels made for summer.
