Handy fan shopping in Japan

A handy fan is a small, portable electric fan designed to be carried or held in your hand, making it easy to use on the go. Yesterday, I headed to the mall with the goal of picking up a new one.

The search turned out to be surprisingly simple. The shop Illusie300 had a fantastic display with every model laid out, switched on, and ready for people to try. It was the kind of setup that makes choosing a summer gadget feel fun rather than overwhelming. And, as I learned from trying each handy fan out, there can be quite a difference in the cooling power between fans.

There’s also a surprisingly wide range of handy fans available. They come in different shapes and sizes, from slim stick‑style fans to compact round ones. They have hand-held options as well as ones that clip or stick on to something. Some offer a single, simple setting, while others have multiple power levels so you can adjust the airflow to the heat of the day. You’ll find models that run on replaceable batteries and others that recharge through a USB port. They range in price too.

What you choose really comes down to personal preferences, but one thing I do recommend is shopping at a store that lets you try the fans in person.  A display where the models are switched on and easy to test makes a huge difference - you can feel the airflow, check the weight, and see which style actually suits you before buying.
