Blue Impulse: More Than Just an Air Show Attraction

If there's one aerial display team that captures the attention of people across Japan, it's Blue Impulse. Officially the aerobatic demonstration team of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force, they are famous for their breathtaking precision flying and dramatic sky formations.
What makes Blue Impulse special is that they are viewed by many as more than a military aviation team. Their appearances are often linked to major national events, celebrations, and moments of public significance. Over the decades, they have become a symbol of teamwork, skill, and national pride.
When Blue Impulse is scheduled to perform, huge crowds often gather hours in advance for a glimpse of the blue-and-white aircraft painting patterns across the sky. I joined those crowds today, for the rare opportunity to see Blue Impulse perform. And I don't normally do crowds: only on very special occasions, such as to see such a cultural icon as the Blue Impulse.
It’s hard to describe just how incredible it is to watch Blue Impulse. I always get goosebumps, and today I even had a tear in my eye. When thousands of people turn out to watch and celebrate what many consider a national treasure, it creates an atmosphere that’s every bit as memorable as the display itself.
Have you ever seen Blue Impulse perform?
