Sausage Day Marking a Milestone in Japan's Food History

Sausage Day Marking a Milestone in Japan's Food History photo

Today, and November 1st annually is Sausage Day ソーセージの日 in Japan. It commemorates an important milestone in Japan's food history.  On 1st November 1917, Ichizo Oki exhibited what is considered Japan's first sausage at the First Kanagawa Livestock Exhibition. The date was later chosen for Sausage Day to honor this historic achievement.

Oki went on to play a significant role in developing Japan's ham and sausage industry, founding businesses, training future generations of meat-processing specialists, and contributing to the establishment of Japanese agricultural and food standards. The commemorative day also aims to preserve his legacy and promote the revival of traditional Oki-style ham and sausages.

While I happily eat sausages in Japan, this is one area where, in my opinion, Japan doesn't quite match what I grew up with. Irish sausages tend to be meatier, heartier, and full of flavour, making them a comfort food favourite back home. Japanese sausages are popular and widely available, but given the choice, I'd still reach for a good Irish sausage every time. That said, Sausage Day is a fun reminder of how food traditions evolve and travel between countries.
