How Japan residents are responding to ever-rising prices
I think for a lot of us, the rising cost of living has become increasingly hard to ignore, and a new survey suggests many Japanese households are changing the way they shop because of it. According to research from Aruru Creative Products Mall, more than 70% of respondents believe prices here will continue climbing, with many already adjusting their spending habits in response.

The survey found that 68.6% of people had made what researchers called "early purchases," which is essentially buying items sooner than planned because they expected prices to rise further. Food and daily necessities dominated those purchases, with more than 90% of respondents saying they were stocking up on essentials before the next round of increases hit.
That behavior has become increasingly common across Japan according to the study. Many households are buying rice, frozen foods, toiletries, and cleaning supplies in bulk whenever supermarkets run promotions, which seems to be less about panic buying and more strategic budgeting. I think when you see prices rise steadily over time, even saving a few hundred yen per shopping trip starts to matter.
In saying that, the survey also highlighted a growing sense of caution among consumers, with around one-third of respondents saying they now reconsider whether purchases are truly necessary before spending money. Others reported comparing prices more carefully across websites or delaying non-essential purchases altogether.
Are you stockpiling, or holding off?
