Would you join the SDF as a foreigner in Japan?

Would you feel compelled to join the defense force of a country that isn't your "home"? As a foreigner living here it's an interesting question to consider. Until now, joining the SDF hasn't really been something most of us could contemplate, regardless of how long we've lived here or how connected we feel to Japan.

That could potentially change, at least in a limited way.

A panel of experts from the Sasakawa Peace Foundation has recommended that Japan consider recruiting foreign nationals as the SDF struggles to attract enough personnel. The shrinking population is making recruitment extra difficult, with the SDF having around 217,700 members in fiscal 2025, which is only about 88% of its target workforce.

The proposal isn't suggesting that foreigners would just be able to walk into a recruitment office and sign up for any role. Eligibility could be limited to citizens of allied or like-minded countries, with thorough background checks and confidentiality agreements. Foreign recruits could also be restricted to certain roles, such as base operations and garrison duties, with limited access to classified info.

Interestingly, the panel specifically pointed to my home country of Australia as an example, where certain foreign citizens, including eligible permanent residents from particular countries, can join the military under certain conditions.

Would I join the SDF? Realistically, I don't think so, and not just because I'm in my 40s now. Living in Japan, paying taxes here, working here, making friends here, and generally feeling like this is home is one thing, but joining the military feels like a very different level of commitment. I think that's what makes this proposal so interesting for expats. How connected to Japan do you have to feel before you'd be willing to defend it?
