Golden Week as the time for smart, close-to-home stays

Golden Week is one of my absolute least favorite times of year to travel. I did it one year, and it was crowded and miserable, so I vowed never again. However, for some folks it might be the only time they can get a decent enough stretch of time off work, so sometimes you've gotta do what you gotta do.

If you happen to be looking for a little Golden Week travel inspiration, Hoshino Resorts recently released their latest "Holiday Strategy Series" proposal, which is essentially a nudge towards short, close, and relatively affordable stays instead of big, far-flung trips. Their angle is that rather than fighting the crowds, you can "win" Golden Week by dodging them entirely and investing in quality downtime near to home.

Now, it's worth saying up front that this info comes from a resort chain marketing their own properties, so take it with a grain of salt. The ideas are still useful though, especially if you're trying to travel smart during peak season.

For those based around Tokyo, they highlight easy "nature reset" options like Karuizawa and the Tanigawadake ropeway area in Gunma. They're pitched as low-effort escapes where you can still get alpine views and fresh air without committing to full-on hiking expeditions or white-knuckling the traffic. There's also a new mountain hotel concept near Oze that leans heavily into "comfortable hiking," with things like heated toilets and ready-to-go hiking kits.

On the city side, their focus is on staycations in Yokohama and nearby areas. The idea is to avoid restaurant queues and sightseeing crowds by either staying in quiet business districts or booking apartment-style hotels where you can self-cater and basically live like a local for a few days. Places like Tsuchiura in Ibaraki were also pitched as budget-friendly bases for seasonal views like nemophila fields.

Have you got any ideas for closer-to-home stays over the Golden Week period for this year?
