Sky week (kinda!) experiences in Japan: on board the Izumo

My husband had some pretty cool experiences during his time in the US military here in Japan. One of those, which is somewhat "Sky Week" related, was getting to go aboard the Izumo. Long story short, the Izumo is a warship operated by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) that functions as a helicopter carrier.

The reason he got to go onboard the ship was for the purpose of a US/Japan joint military exercise observation, and the group of multinational military officers that got to go aboard actually slept on the ship for a couple of nights! They had to fly on to board, and my husband's picture I've included for this blog is the helicopter they flew onto the ship with.

Some interesting points about the ship that he told me about included that they didn't have standard showers on the ship, it was actually Japanese style onsen/ofuro! They also had very large and clean corridors onboard, which he felt was not the same as American ships he had been on.

He also mentioned that the food onboard was really good. Curry is the big thing in the Maritime Self Defense-Force menu, and he gave it the two thumbs up.
