Sweet potato harvesting time

Along with the rice fields around us turning golden and harvesting well underway, there's another kind of harvest happening for sweet potatoes!

Our neighbors grow a wonderful assortment of fruits and veggies throughout the year, and one of my favorite things about living out here is that our kids get to see where so much of their food actually comes from. They've been invited over across several years to help with the sweet potato harvest, getting their hands into the soil and digging up the potatoes themselves. There's something very different about digging up a sweet potato straight from the ground compared with picking one up perfectly clean from a supermarket shelf!

The kids get to see the work that goes into growing food, learn about the seasons, and, of course, get very muddy in the process. I think it's wonderful for their own appreciation and understanding of food production.
