Halloween in Japan and how much is too much?

For parents raising children in Japan, Halloween can come with the ever-pressing question of how much effort are you actually supposed to put in?!

A survey of 109 parents conducted by Kodansha's parenting media Cocreco explored the different expectations families face when preparing for the spooky season. While some households go all out with elaborate costumes and homemade treats, others prefer to keep things simple.

Children's costumes emerged as a key source of uncertainty. Parents reported wondering how much to spend, whether to make an outfit themselves or buy one, and how their choices compared with those of other families. Some had expected inexpensive accessories to be more than enough, only to discover that other children wore much more elaborate outfits.

Halloween treats can also require a little diplomacy. Parents raised questions about how many sweets to prepare for exchanges with friends, whether homemade food is appropriate, and how to accommodate children with food allergies.

For expat families, these questions may sound familiar, especially when school events and friendship groups introduce different expectations. The survey is a good reminder that there is no single way Japanese families celebrate Halloween, so do what suits your household best!
