Creating a "lazy room" in Japan for under 10,000 yen

How do you spend your money on comfort items or things that make your life here easier? A recent survey by HADO Co., Ltd. looked into it, exploring what they called the "immovable lifestyle." Basically, it's where people design their living space so efficiently that they barely need to get up on their days off.

If I had a view like this I would probably be reluctant to move, too...

Around 30% of respondents said that they spend more than half a day in one spot. It sounds extreme, but the interesting part to me was how little this kind of setup costs. Most people reported spending around 10,000 yen to get their living space that way, which seemed pretty reasonable all things considered!

For us as expats in Japan, especially those who are living in smaller apartments, I think this idea of optimizing space can feel relatable. Instead of splurging on heavy furniture, people are choosing items like extra-long charging cables, side tables within arm's reach, or even grabber tools to avoid getting up. To me it came across as less about laziness and more about reducing friction in daily life.

From a financial perspective, it's also a reminder that quality of life doesn't always require big spending. In a country where convenience is already built into daily systems, small, targeted purchases can go a long way!
