Do you still stop for koi?

Do you fellow expats still have things that feel like a novelty, even after years of living here? For me, one of them is koi. I think that no matter where I see them, I always find myself stopping to admire them for a bit.

It could be because my kids are still enamored with all things animals, and they also want to appreciate them when they see them, but there's a nicety in that, too. Seeing Japan's magic through the eyes of a child also reminds me to slow down and appreciate stuff more.

How about you? What small, everyday parts of Japan still stop you in your tracks after years of living here?
