Japan's Most Popular Summer Destinations for 2026
For those Japan-dwelling readers who are planning to vacation in-country, choosing where to escape during the summer can be a serious decision. Do you embrace the heat and head for the beach somewhere like Okinawa, or make a break for cooler (somewhat, anyway!) temperatures up north in Hokkaido?
According to new search data from travel comparison site Travelko, those two prefectures are once again Japan's most popular domestic destinations for summer 2026.

In Okinawa, Naha takes the top spot, followed by Onna Village, Ishigaki Island, Miyako Island, and Nago. The growing range of resort accommodation around Onna and new attractions in Nago are helping to boost interest, while Ishigaki and Miyako remain popular with folks who are looking for beautiful beaches and a more relaxed island stay.
Hokkaido's rankings are topped by Sapporo, followed by Hakodate and Asahikawa. Tomamu takes fourth place offering a cooler highland escape, while Noboribetsu rounds out the top five with hot springs, nature, and summer festivals.
Are Hokkaido or Okinawa on your summer trip list? Have you visited those prefectures before?
