Where locals want to drive this summer

One thing that my husband and I found early on in our Japan journey was that taking trips by car was a lot more convenient than plane or train, especially once kids came along. It often ends up being more cost-effective, but there's also the fact that you can stop whenever you need to and take advantage of the great highway rest areas here.

I saw a study today by NEXER and Goo-net Used Cars, which surveyed over 1,100 people across Japan about where they'd most like to drive this summer. The results give plenty of ideas for those of us also hoping to explore more of the country by car!

In Hokkaido and Tohoku, cooler temperatures and scenic night views proved popular, with Mount Hakodate taking the top spot and Otaru Canal close behind. These northern regions also drew interest for their fresh seafood, hot springs, and broad open roads that make summer driving especially appealing.

Closer to Tokyo, the ever-popular seaside spot of Enoshima came out on top. There was a pattern of wanting to escape the inland heat by heading to the coast, or by driving into the Nasu Highlands or around Mount Fuji to enjoy cooler mountain air and open views.

In the Chubu region, Mount Fuji again led the list, sharing the spotlight with Kamikochi's alpine scenery and even Universal Studios Japan got points for a fun and family-friendly getaway. I personally don't know that I'd opt for USJ in peak summer, but each to their own, I say!

Meanwhile in Kansai, Awaji Island was the top pick thanks to its relaxed island vibe, local cuisine, and gentle drives along the coast. Lake Biwa and Amanohashidate also ranked highly, showing that waterside scenery and summer seem to go hand in hand.

In Chugoku and Shikoku, the Shimanami Kaido was top, which surprised me as I thought it was better known as a cycling spot than a driving one!

Down south in Kyushu, Takachiho Gorge was the most desired summer drive, and the Dutch-inspired theme park Huis Ten Bosch also drew interest as a way to experience a European atmosphere without leaving Japan.

Have you got any road trip plans this summer? Were any of these spots on your list of places to consider?
