Bear sightings prompting workplace safety shifts in Japan

I read an article today via the Japan Times about how the growing number of bear sightings here is beginning to reshape the work environment, especially in northern regions like Hokkaido and Tohoku. What was once a concern limited to a handful of rural areas is now prompting private companies across multiple sectors to rethink their daily operations and overall employee safety.

Areas like mine are becoming more and more bear-filled, and that's prompting some workplaces to take action.

Convenience store chains are among those responding most visibly, such as Family Mart. They've begun showing safety warnings on digital displays at around 10,000 of their stores, reminding staff to stop their outdoor tasks if bears are seen nearby and to guide customers indoors for shelter. Some stores in Hokkaido and Tohoku will also receive bear-repellent spray as a deterrent. Lawson is distributing similar equipment to around 100 of their outlets and even adjusting their automatic doors to prevent bears from wandering in, and 7-Eleven franchisees have been advised to consider temporary closures if sightings occur close by.

Delivery companies are also changing up their routines. Japan Post said they might suspend mail and parcel deliveries when police restrict access or drivers encounter bears (as they should!!) and they're avoiding using mopeds after 5pm in affected areas. Yamato Transport and Sagawa Express have gone ahead and introduced new safety manuals, along with bear spray distribution and staff updates on local bear activity.

I thought it was interesting that even office-based companies are making changes. Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance now subsidizes bear spray for employees in higher-risk regions, and allows flexible work hours or remote work.

As these kinds of measures spread, it's clear that the record bear activity this year is influencing not only wildlife policy but also the everyday routines of work life.

Do you know about any other companies making changes like these?
