Things I love about Japan's rainy season: moss
I think flowers get a lot of love throughout the year, some definitely more than others, and during the rainy season it's really all about hydrangeas. Irises get a bit of appreciation, too, but one thing that flies under the radar (IMO) is moss. I love how it seems to thrive in the most random of spots, and it just feels whimsical to me.
I saw this display locally, and it made me smile! If I had a big yard with lots of moss, I'd love to decorate it similarly, with little gachapon toys and things like that.
A mossy display I saw locally - I loved the creativity!
There are some dedicated temples in Japan that are known as "moss temples" (Saiho-ji in Kyoto is one of them), but I almost guarantee you that at this time of year you could walk around your local neighborhood and find it covering random rocks, concrete, and so forth. Take a wander around some of your nearby shrines and temples, too, as those are often good places for moss-spotting!
Do you know of any good moss-covered spots in your corner of Japan?
