Traditional fireworks versus drone shows in Japan

There's something special about traditional fireworks festivals here. The atmosphere, the festival stalls, people wearing yukata, and the actual displays of pyrotechnics are top tier. It feels like a key part of summer, and I can't imagine the country completely giving that up.

However, I've noticed the rise of drone shows becoming an interesting alternative. Instead of fireworks exploding overhead, hundreds or even thousands of drones can create moving pictures, characters, and elaborate shapes in the night sky. They're also much quieter and, importantly, don't involve the same smoke, debris, and explosive materials as traditional fireworks do.

As someone who loves Japan's traditions, I'm a little torn, and I think my heart will probably always choose fireworks. There's a nostalgia to them that drones can't quite replicate, and that feels especially so after spending so many summers here and seeing big name fireworks events like the Nagaoka Fireworks Festival.

In saying that, my practical side can see why drone shows are appealing. They offer some really cool displays while potentially being a more environmentally friendly option, and they can be used in places where fireworks aren't practical.
