These hard candies are known as bekkō-ame (literally, tortoiseshell candy), and they are made using sugar and water. What makes these ones extra cute is that they are cat themed, and cover a few different designs -- there are cat faces with different expressions, cat bodies, and a paw print among them. Each candy is individually wrapped, too, which makes them convenient for sharing with others. The taste is nice, and I think having a couple in your bag when you're on the go is a nice thing -- I always like to have some kind of candy or lozenge on hand in case I get a tickle in my throat!

The individual wrapping is nice from a sharing perspective, but it does amount to a lot of additional single use plastic waste. I know that other hard candies I've purchased before have all been bagged together without needing individual wrapping, so I wonder why they couldn't (or didn't) go that route with these ones. Overall though these are very cute, and coincided with a lot of cat-themed products being released for Neko no Hi on February 22nd. I'm guessing they won't be around for much longer, so if they sound fun to you be sure to head in to your nearest Kaldi store sooner rather than later!
