The description

This product is a tsukimi pie containing kinako mochi and red bean paste, and it's available for a limited time at McDonalds stores. It was priced at 190 yen.

The good

Fellow City-Cost contributor ToneToEdo recently asked in the Q&A section about foods that people typically eat/prepare for tsukimi, and I mentioned my family and I often go down the fast food route. McDonalds has a tsukimi pie on offer this year, and it is packed with traditional flavors for this traditional celebration. The pie contains a kinako-flavored cream, a chewy mochi layer, and red bean paste, so it's great if you like those earthy, traditionally Japanese flavors. I found it to be a nice fusion of Japanese flavors with a Western-style pie, and the price isn't bad either at only 190 yen including tax.

The not so good

We got this yesterday for tsukimi, but I don't know how much longer it'll be around for -- I'm guessing just a few more days since the 17th was the official moon viewing date. If you find yourself really liking it, it's going to disappear pretty soon. Also, for folks that don't really like the traditional, earthy flavors of things like red bean and kinako, this isn't really going to appeal to you. I loved it though, and really enjoyed that it incorporated Japanese flavors to a Western-style pie. If you haven't already tried it, check at your local McDonalds ASAP if it sounds good to you. Happy eating!
