The description
The vanilla old fashion donut (バニラ オールドファッションドーナツ) is part of Starbucks Japan’s seasonal summer range this year and appears to be available at most/all Starbucks cafes. It costs 310 yen, including tax.
The good
This donut basically seems to be a variation on Starbucks’ usual chocolate old fashion(ed) donut, and it shares a lot of the same features. Along with the general appearance of the donut, the texture and base are much the same. The dough is firm but moist, and mildly sweet to complement the icing/frosting. Unlike the chocolate version, the whole top of the vanilla old fashion donut is covered in the icing, which is vanilla but very mildly so. If anything, it seems to err more on the milky side, with a light but discernible taste of vanilla beans.
The not so good
I wouldn’t say milk is my top flavour for sweets - I prefer my vanilla to have more actual vanilla, and this is definitely on the lighter side of things. That said, this donut actually does work. The mild flavours feels right for the summer heat and tends to pair well with the iced black coffees I tend to go for at this time of year. It’s not a particularly exciting treat, and I still tend to go for the standard Starbucks sugar donuts. But it is a nice variation and at least worth a try!
