A late season check-in with the Oga lotuses

Gallery

Last week, I went out to Chiba Park to try and catch a late-season glimpse of Chiba’s Oga lotus blossoms (オオガハス). They seem to peak during rainy season and, what with it being mid-July and the full-blown Japanese summer elbowing its way in, a lot of them had been and gone.

Nonetheless, there were a few flowers peaking through the enormous green leaves, and that made the stroll worthwhile. Honestly though, it was pretty interesting just following the walkway through the leaves with these enormous plants towering over me, though it somehow managed to be even more humid amongst them.

The Oga lotus is something Chiba takes pride in - they’re over 2000 years old! It’s always nice to check them out when they’re blooming at Chiba Park, even if I’m a bit late to the party this year.

Here’s a post I made when I got to visit them in a more timely fashion!
